Generosity boosts fireys' leadership skills

A group of CFA volunteers will have the opportunity to boost their leadership skills thanks to a generous donation from the IGA Community Chest Program.

IGA stores have raised more than $114,000, enabling CFA to offer four additional Fireline Leadership courses to CFA members.

CFA’s Fireline Leadership Program Coordinator and Senior Instructor Jamie Mackenzie said these courses would provide a targeted leadership development opportunity to newly elected brigade leaders and future leaders.

“The program promotes the development of skills, behaviours and cultural attitudes which enable first response leaders to make sound command decisions, communicate effectively and prepare cohesive teams,” he said.

“The leadership philosophies and techniques introduced in this program have been proven effective in building and maintaining effective teams that work in stressful and high-risk operations.

“Thanks to the generosity of IGA and the community, the 80 CFA members undertaking the course will come away with a direction and plan for strengthening themselves and their brigade, and give them the leadership tools to help them and their teams protect lives and property.”

IGA stores across Victoria have had a long and valued relationship with CFA. To continue to strengthen these relationships, IGA leaders and upcoming leaders from Ashburton, Lang Lang, Cobden, Stawell, Warracknabeal and Rutherglen stores will join CFA members on these Fireline Leadership courses.

Mr Mackenzie said together they would share experiences, challenges and lessons about leadership in today’s complex environment.

“This is a great opportunity for our members to work alongside leaders in a different field and foster their relationship together.”

The next two courses will take place in Trafalgar and Glenormiston on Friday 11 September which will run over two weekends.

Since the partnership began in 2000, Victorian IGA stores have donated more than $3 million to CFA through the IGA Community Chest program.
