To celebrate National Volunteer Week (13-19 May), CFA is saying “thanks a million” to its volunteers, families and employers for everything they do. This week we will feature a series of profile stories to highlight the great work and diversity of our volunteer members.
After a car crashed into their home, trapping the driver, the first emergency service to reach the scene was CFA's Ferny Creek brigade. Home owners Declan and Kathryn were so impressed by the CFA volunteers that they wrote this letter of thanks.
"In the early hours of Sunday April 28th, an out-of-control car crashed into our carport lodging itself behind a retaining wall just a metre from our bedroom. When we recovered from the initial shock of the incident, it was clear that all emergency services would be required to extract the injured driver from her car.
"Within minutes of dialling 000, the first responders were our own local CFA brigade, manned by familiar faces and led by Incident Controller John Tomada, who went methodically about their extraordinary recovery mission.
“To say we were relieved and grateful for the magnificent work of the brigade would be putting it lightly. Calm, courteous, compassionate and above all supremely competent goes some way toward a fuller description of how CFA conducted itself on a harrowing night for us and our children.
"It remains a constant source of reassurance for us and our neighbours that the CFA are in our neighbourhood. But never in our most creative imaginings would we have anticipated their need as we did that Sunday morning.
"Please accept our sincere thanks for a job magnificently done and a performance of duty which reflects the best skills and traditions of volunteer firefighters."
