Arthurs Creek, Mernda, South Morang, Doreen, Wildwood, Bulla and Plenty, brigades worked to make sure that a burn in a ten-hectare area of gorse went off without a hitch last Monday (29 June).
Stephen Hull, one of CFA’s fuel reduction specialists who led the burn in support of volunteer members, captured some great photos of the planned burn, which will also be featured in a mini-documentary being created by staff from the Whittlesea City Council, who took aerial footage on the day.
Stephen thanked members for their contribution to the successful operation, which aimed to reduce bushfire risk in the area.
“A lot of brigade members attended, including a few young ones on their first fire. The burn provided a good opportunity for them to gain experience,” he said.
Stephen said that fuel reduction burns conducted during the cooler months were one of the most effective methods available to lessen bushfire risk.
“As a result of the work we are doing today, any bushfire that goes through the area in future will burn with far less speed and intensity,” he said.
Mr Hull said while DELWP were responsible for planned burning on public land, landholders with large areas of bushland occasionally sought assistance or advice from CFA to reduce the fuel on their properties.
The ten-hectare property was located between Regent St, Mernda, and Quarry Hills Park, South Morang.
A small test burn in an area of gorse was also carried out on Friday ahead of Monday’s operation.
