Happy 70th Birthday Flowerdale Fire Brigade

Flowerdale Fire Brigade celebrated its 70th anniversary with a community gathering and the presentation of 15 service awards.

A large crowd of invited dignitaries, guests and community members joined Flowerdale Fire Brigade members on 19 September to celebrate the brigade's 70th anniversary.

Following a welcome by Brigade Lt Brian Makin, Victorian MP Cindy McLeish addressed the gathering, congratulating the brigade on 70 years of service to the community and spoke about the brigade’s history and future.

“The brigade has a lengthy history of service to the community, not only in firefighting but also in storm recovery and motor vehicle accidents. Members have also actively promoted community safety through their work with the primary school and at community meetings. With 35 members and an active training program, the brigade is well positioned to provide service now and into the future,” Cindy McLeish said.

District Operations Manager Rob van Dorsser, assisted by Brigade Support Officer Nicki Lund presented the service awards including a 20-year award to Norm Berndt, a 25-year award to Mark Hilder and 30-year award to Brian Makin.

Lt Makin spoke about the brigade’s history detailing its growth in membership, fire stations and equipment. He also spoke about the brigade's role in supporting surrounding brigades and communities.

The brigade's past captains were invited to cut the 70th Anniversary cake and official photos were taken before the gathering joined the brigade for an afternoon tea.
