Brigades in the Metcalfe Group had a very busy long weekend with both Harcourt and Taradale brigades getting involved in community activities. Both brigades had their signature community events which are held each year over the Labour Day weekend.
Harcourt Applefest celebrated their Silver Jubilee on Saturday 12 March. It was held in the heart of Harcourt displaying all that is great about the town, including apples, apple cider, apple pie and of course the Harcourt Fire Brigade. An independent site was set up at the fire station, opposite the market site, which included a very popular small fire truck for the kids to play on, set up next to the real ones which were on display, and an information table for the general public. Captain Koala also made numerous appearances throughout the day to join in the fun.
Harcourt Captain Tyrone Rice commented it was “a good opportunity to talk to local residents as well as visitors from other parts of Victoria”. A team from the District 2 Community Education Group helped staff the display bringing their enthusiasm and resources down for the event.
The Taradale Mineral Springs Festival was up next on Sunday 13th March. The Taradale community came together under the shade of the trees where they entertained the crowds with their food, wine and local music. Taradale Fire Brigade was busy throughout the day feeding visitors, the vegie burgers were especially nice, as well as talking to people about their brigade. The District 2 Community Education Group was again in attendance with the Little Red Fire truck being a big hit once more.
Taradale have been busy fundraising for a new Light Tanker for the brigade. Captain Robert Schomacker remarked that a local DELWP firefighter wanted to make a contribution towards the new tanker. “So not only do DEWLP firefighters help us out at our local incidents, one of them has made a significant contribution, indeed the biggest donation by an individual, towards our light tanker appeal” he said.
Both Harcourt and Taradale Brigades wish to thank the District 2 Community Education Group for supporting their events through planning and staffing displays. Although the weather was a little humid it was a great weekend to get out and be amongst the community and show that brigades aren’t just about putting out fires.
