Health, Safety and Environment System

The management system introduction will be the first initiative in OT&V’s program to implement HSE standards AS/NZS 4801 (Occupational Health and Safety Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) in CFA-operated training campuses. The aim is to develop a structured, more robust approach to managing health safety and environment issues across campuses.

This development follows a CFA Board decision to introduce HSE standards in our training campuses, in response to Professor Joy’s report on Fiskville - Understanding the Past to Inform the Future.

A priority initiative

 “Starting now, the implementation of an HSE management system is a priority initiative for OT&V and CFA more broadly. We all have a responsibility for effective HSE management and to proactively support the implementation of necessary change”, Executive Director OT&V Lex de Man said.

HSE governance

Earlier in February, OT&V held a workshop in Boronia exploring why CFA is implementing these standards. The workshop involved campus management and people who pro-actively work on maintaining safety across OT&V. It looked at HSE governance arrangements, a structure within OT&V to manage safety, roles and responsibilities and the decision-making that supports the implementation of the standards.

A new way of working

Implementation of HSE standards AS/NZS 4801 and ISO 14001 will generate a new way of working in our training campuses. It will give them greater access to HSE tools that support a risk management approach to the development of controls and procedures to prevent incidents. The standards will demonstrate that CFA-operated campuses are striving towards the highest standards associated with training facilities Australia-wide.

A major aspect of the Health Safety Environment implementation program is to engage and consult with training campuses management, review and endorse procedures, risk assessment and work instructions.
