In the early hours of Thursday morning, Heyfield Fire Brigade responded to a call for a bedroom fire that had broken out at a home in Heyfield.

Thanks to the swift efforts of crews, and support from neighbouring brigades—Seaton, Cowwarr, and Winnindoo—the fire was successfully contained to the room of origin, preventing further damage to the home.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a significant build-up of smoke and heat.

Lieutenant Ryan Johnstone was one of the first on the scene.

“The smoke and heat build-up was almost at floor level when we opened the door, and we knew we had to be quick,” he said.

Heyfield Fire Brigade conducted an aggressive internal attack, working swiftly to bring the fire under control.

Incident Controller and Captain of Heyfield Fire Brigade, Jade Wheeler, expressed her pride in the work of the responding crews.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work the crews did,” she said.

“Their quick thinking and skillful firefighting stopped what could have been a much more devastating situation.”

This incident serves as a timely reminder for households to ensure their smoke alarms are functional and escape plans are in place, particularly as we approach the summer fire season.
