CFA crews saved a historic part of the Batesford Hotel after a fire in the early hours of Thursday (4 August).
CFA District 7 Operations Officer Geoff McGill said firefighters were called to the hotel around 12.20am and aggressively attacked the fire to stop it spreading.
“The fire, which we believe originated in the kitchen area, moved into the roof cavity and took hold in the roof space,” he said.
“The outside tin roof sheeting and the straw insulation made it a difficult fire to extinguish.”
The fire was called under control at 2.20am.
Mr McGill praised the great work of firefighters in saving the historic part of the pub.
“We were able to push the fire back to the new renovation. While the function room which is around 14 by 24 metres has been significantly damaged, this really was a great save on the historic part of the pub.”
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
Around eight trucks attended the Ballarat Road premises from Geelong, Geelong West, Bannockburn, Corio, Stonehaven and Barrabool.
