Earlier this month, CFA volunteers and staff from District 5 once again hosted a stand at the popular Hamilton Agriculture Show – Sheepvention.
This year CFA showcased the small mistakes that cause house fires as part of the annual home fire safety campaign, Safe Mistake Zone.
Community Education Coordinator Tiff Heeson said the CFA display, stationed in the Producer’s Pavilion, attracted more than 400 visitors over the two days.
“CFA had great engagement at the show this year,” Tiff said.
“We set up a seventies-style kitchen display with lots of different hazards, and everyone was really keen to listen to our advice and participate in our activities.”
Focussing on hazards in the kitchen, the display took a unique look at the difference between traditional and modern home cooking techniques. CFA members ran competitions where visitors had to spot five hazards in the kitchen that could cause fires, and identify ways to reduce these risks. The winners walked away with a hamper filled with all the home fire safety essentials – a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, batteries and a smoke alarm unit.
CFA was also invited to MC the guest chef demonstrations that were delivered next to the stand, providing a great opportunity to present home fire safety sessions to the large audience gathered in the pavilion.
Sheepvention is held each year at the Hamilton Showgrounds. The show is hosted by the Hamilton Pastoral and Agricultural Society, and last year attracted over 25,000 visitors.
