Mallee residents are being urged to be fire ready tomorrow with temperatures in the mid 30’s leading to a forecast for severe fire danger.
CFA District 18 Operations Manager Bill Johnstone said tomorrow’s forecast presents significant potential for fires.
“While summer is still a few weeks away, the fire danger is already here,” he said.
“The Fire Danger Period has been declared in the Mallee which means fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer.
“While harvesting can still go ahead, it’s important farmers monitor the weather conditions closely throughout the day.
“Farm machinery should be free from faults, be fitted with a spark arrester and carry a knapsack pump or fire extinguisher.
“We could be in for a long and hot summer so the community needs to stay informed and stay safe.”
Mr Johnstone said residents in the Mallee should already have a plan and know what to do if a fire starts.
“Don’t rely on getting a warning – it’s your responsibility to know when to leave, so stay aware of your surroundings over summer. For example, check for smoke in the air and listen for sirens,” he said.
