House fire amid hail storms

CFA crews battled hail storms before reaching a house fire on Couchs Rd, Nullawarre North, which was fully alight when they arrived just after midnight this morning (13 July).

An elderly resident evacuated safely from the home and six crews from Allansford, Mepunga, Nirranda, Nullawarre and Warrnambool had the blaze under control by 2am.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home.

District 5 Rostered Duty Officer Steve Cooper said while investigators are yet to determine the cause, the incident is a reminder that residents need to be mindful of appliances they’re using inside their homes.

“CFA crews had the additional challenge of navigating hail-covered roads, so they did a great job not only putting out this fire but arriving safely to carry out their duties,” Mr Cooper said.

“This type of cold and stormy weather means we want to keep our homes warm with open fire places, gas or electric heating.

“Residents need to take extra care with safety measures like having guards in front of open fire places, keeping flues clean and servicing heaters regularly.

“Making sure you’re drying clothes at least a metre away from heaters and checking your smoke alarm is in working order are other simple safety measures we can all carry out to reduce fire risk this winter.”
