CFA crews responded to a house fire this morning at Menzies Creek, west of Emerald in Melbourne’s east, arriving on scene shortly after 6am.
Menzies Creek Brigade were first on scene, arriving to find smoke issuing from the roof of the single storey dwelling.
District 13 Operations Officer Jason Lawrence said first responding crews got in quickly and largely contained the fire to the bedroom, which was the room of origin.
“Firefighters went in using breathing apparatus and conducted an internal search of the property,” he said.
“They found an elderly woman who was overcome by smoke, and taken her outside where they were able to perform CPR and first aid, but unfortunately the woman has died.”
Mr Lawrence said the woman had been the only occupant at the home, located on School Rd. While the fire was not large, the home was heavily smoke damaged.
Four trucks attended the fire, including two tankers from Menzies Creek, and one tanker and one slip-on from Clematis. Support was also provided from Bayswater Brigade.
The fire was brought under control at 6.37am, and fire investigators attended shortly afterwards. A cause for the fire is yet to be confirmed.
Counselling and other support services have been offered to firefighters who attended the incident.
