House fire in Churchill

Neighbours were the first to notice smoke issuing from a house in Churchill yesterday.

Fire severely damaged a number of downstairs rooms before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. Smoke and heat from the fire also impacted heavily throughout the double-storey house. Nobody was home at the time the fire started.

Churchill Captain Steven Barling said "It was a great effort by volunteer and staff crews to save 80 per cent of the house, and it was very hot, hard work in the warmer temperatures yesterday."

Breathing apparatus wearers working inside the house were rotated once the fire was knocked down to ensure adequate recovery after working in the hot conditions.

Crews from Churchill, Morwell, Hazelwood North and Traralgon attended.
