House, sheds, cars destroyed at Heathcote

A lawn mower has sparked a grassfire on Saturday afternoon (28 January) in Heathcote destroying one house, three sheds and eight cars.

Firefighters were called around 3.20pm to a grassfire in Yemm Lane in Heathcote.

CFA District 2 Operations Officer Trent McKinnon said the grassfire had spread quickly into a neighbouring house.

“At the height of the fire we had 20 trucks helping to contain the fire,” he said.

“It was caused by a mower in a paddock and it took off very quickly. It impacted on a number of assets including one house, three sheds and a number of old cars in the paddock too.”

The fire was brought under control just before 7pm and firefighters remained at the scene for some time to black out, ensuring the scene was safe.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the scene for any hot spots today (Sunday, 29 January) ahead of increased temperatures and a spike in fire danger on Monday.
