Hyland Group of brigades in Gippsland ran its annual pre-summer training exercise on 13 October.
The exercise simulated a large-scale bushfire burning north of Glengarry, with spotting occurring to the south.
Two sectors were created, each managed by a sector commander. The northern sector focused on identifying and protecting assets, while the southern sector was tasked with extinguishing a fast-moving grassfire which was the result of a spotfire.
The exercise involved 10 tankers and two field command vehicles, which formed two strike teams. Toongabbie Local Command Facility supported the exercise, and a staging area was set up at Glengarry Recreation Reserve.
Exercise Controller and Deputy Group Officer Brodie Goodwin was pleased with the outcomes of the training
“The day was a fantastic way for our brigades to practise a strike team deployment," brodie said. "The exercise gave our leaders, both current and emerging, the opportunity to perform new roles and allowed us to activate the LCF and staging area."
