On Thursday 19 December, firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and CFA Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade came together at Derrimut Fire Station for a combined drill to enhance operational effectiveness and interoperability for the fire season.
The drill showcased the critical roles of CFA’s field command vehicles (FCVs) and field operations vehicles (FOVs) in managing wildfire scenarios. These vehicles’ flexibility means they can expand response efforts during escalating emergencies.
This combined drill was an invaluable opportunity for both agencies to refine their approach to manage complex incidents. One of the key outcomes was the demonstration of how interoperability between FRV and CFA can enhance operational outcomes. By working together, the two agencies showed how shared expertise and resources can streamline responses to large-scale incidents, particularly in the unpredictable and rapidly evolving conditions of urban bush or grassfire.
Highlights of the day included FRV’s demonstration of its ladder platform, and discussions about the differences between FRV’s pumper tankers and pumpers. CFA members complemented this by describing the capabilities of their pumper tanker.
The benefits of the joint drill extended beyond the practical exercises. It fostered a stronger relationship between FRV and CFA crews, building trust and reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting our communities. Collaboration of this kind ensures that both services are aligned in their strategies and prepared to respond cohesively when it matters most.
This drill demonstrated that teamwork, combined expertise, and shared resources can amplify the capabilities of each service.
