Kerang Hotel alight

Fire investigators and Energy Safe Victoria determined that a blaze which destroyed 50 per cent of the historic Kerang Hotel was likely the result of an electrical fault.

Brigades: Kerang, Cohuna, Koondrook, Murrabit, Bendigo, Swan Hill, Sandhill Lake and District, Barham (NSW)

Brigades were paged to calls that the Kerang Hotel Motel was on fire around 6:20am Saturday 7 September in Wellington Street.

When the Kerang captain responded he called for 2 pumpers and 5 tankers to respond along with an aerial vehicle from Bendigo. An additional pumper also responded from Barham NSW to assist with water supplies.

When crews arrived, they found the double storey building well alight and spreading. Wordback from Kerang captain at 6:27am was structure fire not yet under control.

At the height of the fire more than 50 firefighters worked to contain the fire to the one building with success.

A NSW firefighter suffered an injury to his leg and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The fire was brought under control at 7:53am with over 50 per cent of the building destroyed.

Crews are still on scene mopping up and inspecting the building's structural integrity.
