Kitchen fire at tavern

Nine people were evacuated from a tavern in Wantirna South overnight after a fire broke out in the kitchen area of the complex, Tuesday 9 September 2014.

CFA District 13 Operations Officer Colin Brown said six patrons and three staff were inside when the fire started just before 2am.

“Staff acted quickly after noticing smoke and successfully evacuated everyone from the premises. One staff member was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was released on site.”

More than 30 CFA and ten MFB firefighters battled the blaze which took about 40 minutes to bring under control.

“The fire caused extensive damage throughout the complex, with internal structural damage in the bistro, TAB and bottleshop.”

CFA Fire Investigators are on scene this morning to determine a cause.
