Jess Cockerill-Wright was promoted to lieutenant after serving 10 years with the brigade.

A bushfire near her house as a kid and the urge to help inspired Jess to join as a junior in 2008.

She has worked her way through the ranks, completing training in breathing apparatus, monitoring hazardous environments, and aggressive internal structure fire attack, as well as becoming a core responder for the brigade.

She has been acknowledged for her efforts, receiving the Clarrie Riordan Memorial Award in 2015 in recognition of her achievements in competition as well as her role in encouraging community and team spirit.

Jess said she was excited and honoured to be the brigade’s first female officer.

“CFA has been a big part of my life. I love the friendships I’ve made, the comradeship - the Kyneton Brigade is like my second family,” Jess said.

"I’m really enjoying this new opportunity to learn and grow within the brigade.”

Brigade Captain Josh Gamble said it was great to have Jess on board in a leadership capacity.

“Each individual brings their own experiences and strengths and it's about using those strengths to achieve the common goal,” he said.

Kyneton Fire Brigade currently has 13 female members - 10 of whom are operational firefighters.
