Langwarrin Fire Brigade and Langwarrin Running Club came together on Saturday to host special guest marathon runner Steve Moneghetti, who travelled down from Ballarat to coach the members of the running club.
Members from the running club headed off from the fire station up to the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna reserve approx. 3kms away. Once in the reserve, members were privileged to complete what is known as the ‘Mona Fartlek’ with the champion himself. The famous running session known throughout the world was devised by Steve and his coach back in the 80’s. It’s a tempo run that lasts for 20mins.
After the session, the members jogged back refuelling with a hot coffee from the local coffee van and headed back into the fire station for an inspiring question and answer session with Steve. Fire Fighter Gerry Sheridan is a CFA member at Langwarrin CFA as well as a member of the running Club, Gerry said, “The running club gives me the avenue to meet other members of the community. It keeps me physically and mentally fit which has a huge benefit on the fireground.”
Langwarrin Running Club Coach Julian Arnold said, “Langwarrin CFA is a fantastic bunch of people, thanks for hosting Steve and the club. The volunteers do a great job for the community and this event shows another side to the community.”
Langwarrin Captain Clint Lawrey said, “It was fantastic to see two local community organisations supporting each other. Langwarrin CFA is always happy to support local community groups.”
Langwarrin CFA was happy to recieve unexpected donations on the day from both the club and the coffee van sales, these donations will be put to good use.
