Crews were called to the incident at Natimuk-Wimmera Highway shorty before 3am.

CFA District 17 Operations Officer Alfred Mason said over 500 hay bales were fully alight when firefighters arrived.

“Firefighters from Vectis, Mitre, Grass Flat and Natimuk brigades all worked extremely well together to contain the fire,” Alfred said.

“The fire was called under control at 3.30am, though the hay will continue to burn for an extended period of time.

“Forecasts suggest we may experience significant winds this afternoon, so crews will remain on scene to ensure the fire doesn't flare up.

“We have an excavator at the property, ready to pull the hay bales apart and assist with extinguishment.

“It’s an important and timely reminder for all property owners to be aware of hay and fire safety.”

Firefighters in CFA’s West Region were also called to a large haystack fire this morning in Hunter.

Crews were called to the incident at Elmore-Mitiamo Road shortly before 7am.

Over 150 round bales of hay were fully alight on arrival. Crews were able to call the job under control within 10 minutes.

Four CFA trucks from Hunter, Kamarooka, Goornong and Elmore attended.
