Cisco the horse found himself in deep trouble in Sunbury, yesterday afternoon (10 June).
CFA crews were called to rescue a horse that had fallen into a drain in Jackson Hill Sunbury at 12.50pm.
A woman on the neighbouring property notified emergency services when she spotted that Cisco the horse was trapped in a pit up to his neck.
Firefighters from Sunbury made it on scene and Arthur’s Creek CFA was called to the incident as the brigade has specialist equipment for animal rescues.
Amanda Smrdelj is a volunteer member with the Sunbury brigade and also a professional photographer.
Amanda made her way to the incident to assist and capture the hard work of emergency crews rescuing the horse.
“It was a great team effort today as CFA, SES, local business’ and individuals pitched in to help Cisco the horse,” Amanda said.
CFA, Sunbury and Gisborne SES, Croxford Earthmoving and the local veterinary worked together to bring Cisco to safety.
The vet was able to successfully sedate the horse whilst crews drained the pit of water. A vertical lift and a private excavator owned by CFA volunteer was used for the rescue.
“It was inter-agency operations at its best, everyone working together for one cause.
“Lucky for Cisco he was uninjured.
“Although a little cold and sore, the horse should make a full recovery,” Amanda said.
Member of the Arthur’s Creek CFA and Large Animal Rescue Unit Lisal O’Brien said over the last 18 months the unit has attended approximately six horse rescues.
"Safety for the animal and people involved is incredibly important," Lisal said.
“We will not operate without a vet being present; first and foremost we need ensure the animals welfare.
"All emergency services were working in same direction for a great outcome.We all made an incredible team.
