CFA firefighters have helped to successfully rescue a man after his car flipped into a drain in Keysborough.
The crash happened along Springvale Road at 11pm on Wednesday.
Springvale Senior Station Officer Josey Sensi said CFA and paramedics left together and travelled to the scene in convoy with paramedics, which were co-located with the brigade.
“We were flagged down by a man who had witnessed the accident, which was a saving grace for the man in the car,” she said.
“The car had come to rest upside down in a stormwater drain and the driver was unconscious with his head submerged.
Crew members used a thermal imaging camera to discount if there were any other occupants.
“We were in knee-deep water, and with the help of police, we opened the car door, cut the seatbelt and removed the driver.
The patient was then stretchered up to a clear area where Dandenong Rescue had set up lighting.
SSO Sensi said Springvale members trained in Emergency Medical Response (EMR) then worked with paramedics for close to an hour to revive him.
“CFA did compressions for at least 40 to 50 minutes as paramedics treated the patient.”
Ambulance Victoria transported the man to hospital in a critical condition.
