Members are ensuring their skills are up to scratch, with Open Training Days underway at the newly refurbished Volunteer Emergency Management Training Centre (VEMTC) in West Sale.

Several brigades from District 10 attended the first of three planned Open Training Days at the West Sale campus on Sunday, 1 May.

The day featured brigades with a multitude of experience and abilities, working together to train in different types of fires and incidents.

41 volunteers attended the training and worked closely with instructors who provided support and guidance during the day.

CFA Coordinator of Learning and Development, Andrew Shaw said it was important training for volunteers.

“It’s been tough over the past two years with COVID restrictions,” said Mr Shaw.

“We are now easing back into regular training, and utilising our fabulous training facilities like VEMTC West Sale is great for our volunteers.”

Participants gained valuable training experiences and a chance to hone existing skills whilst working in a controlled, live fire environment at the first of the Open Training Days.

Members were tasked with responding to and combating gas and fuel fires and the various types of structure fires they would encounter in their volunteer service.

The day was supported by an FRV crew from Traralgon Fire Station who provided their ladder platform for the duration of the day, allowing volunteers a close-up look at the specialist appliance and its capabilities.

Maffra Fire Brigade assisted with a Rehab Unit, which enabled volunteers to see and experience the capabilities and purpose of protecting firefighter health whilst attending different types of incidents.

Additional Open Training Days will be held in the coming weeks.
