Members reminded to stay safe in heat

CFA members are being urged to take care in hot conditions after the Department of Health issued another Heat Health Alert for the Central, North Central and Wimmera districts today, Wednesday 7 January.

With temperatures expected to hit 40 degrees in some areas, members are being reminded to look after themselves and each other during these hot conditions. As outlined in the Chief Officer’s blog last week, heat-related illness is a very real danger on the fire ground.

Dehydration symptoms include the onset of headache, dizziness, nausea, cramps and dry skin. These signs of dehydration are late signs and should be attended to immediately. If left untreated you can develop heat stress and this may progress to heat stroke very quickly.

CFA’s ‘Health Support Team’ can help with advice or monitoring of crews, and general health related assistance at fires. Members can contact them on 9262 8844, or they can be requested through Vic Fire and the State Duty Officer. You can also see our Fireground Health page on the intranet/Brigades Online.

Make sure listen to your body, rest when needed and stay well hydrated before, during and after your shifts.
