Mortlake fish and chip shop fire

Investigators will return to the scene of an overnight fire at a Mortlake fish and chip and bakery shop.

Crews were called to business on the corner of Dunlop and Officer Streets just before 10.00pm where the store was fully involved in fire.

District 5 Operations Officer Henry Barton said fortunately the store was fairly isolated so there was no threat to other homes or businesses, however, the shop itself was totally destroyed.

He said it took nine appliances from Ellerslie, Kolora, Mortlake, Noorat, Terang and The Sisters more than an hour to bring the fire under control.

OO Barton added that firefighters had to take precautions and work to stop gas bottles at the property from exploding. Crews remained at the job into the early hours of this morning blacking out and cleaning up.

Fire investigators will attend the scene today to try and determine the cause of the fire.
