Mount Mercer plantation fire suspicious

Firefighters have battled strong winds to contain a fire that burnt into a plantation at Mount Mercer.

Crews were called to the fire near Mt Mercer-Dereel Road around 11.30am.

CFA District 7 Duty Officer Geoff McGill said firefighters rallied quickly to attack the fire with as many resources as possible.

“We managed a really good, rapid response,” he said.

“The fire was burning into a pine plantation so combined with strong winds gusting, the risk was high.

“We had air support ready but thanks to firefighters’ quick efforts it wasn’t needed.”

The fire was brought under control around 12.45pm after burning approximately 20ha over an area around 300 metres by one kilometre in size.

Nine crews attended from Mount Mercer, Shelford, Barunah North, Rokewood, Buninyong, Dereel and Napoleons.

A fire investigator will attend to help determine the cause of the blaze which is being treated as suspicious.
