The parties in the Murrindindi civil proceeding have agreed to settle the action. The trial was due to start in the Supreme Court this week, however, the parties agreed to settle this morning.
The parties have agreed to a settlement amount of $300 million with contributions to be made as follows:
- AusNet Services - $260.9 million
- State Parties (including CFA, DELWP and Victoria Police) - $29.1 million
- Utilities Services Corporation Limited - $10 million
Our primary concern throughout this process has always been our people and I hope this news comes as a relief to everyone involved. I would like to thank each and every member who has helped CFA throughout this time. Many CFA members have generously given their time to assist in CFA’s defence by making statements and providing information to our legal team.
The settlement comes as we remember of the sixth anniversary of the 2009 February fires. Some of our people are still recovering from these fires and this can be a difficult time of year for many of our members. As we reflect, we remember the efforts of CFA firefighters who did an outstanding job under extremely difficult fire conditions.
You may also be aware that the Kilmore East civil proceeding was also settled last year. I hope that the end of both proceedings will assist those affected to move forward with their recovery.
