Victorian Premier, Dr Denis Napthine, turned the first sod early this morning at the recently acquired site for a new fire station at Warrnambool.
The location on Mortlake Road is only 1.8km from the existing station and close to the geographic centre of Warrnambool, enabling the brigade’s staff and volunteers to continue their impeccable
service delivery to Warrnambool and its surrounds.
Warrnambool Fire Station Officer in Charge Henry Barton said the brigade, along with Warrnambool City Council, had been monitoring the growth in the south west for some years and understood the need for a new fire station to be able to serve the community into the future.
“Warrnambool Fire Brigade has had a proud history of serving not only our community here in the south west but also throughout Victoria and interstate on many occasions. This new facility will allow us to continue to grow and further support others in need for many years to come”, said Mr Barton.
Construction of the new integrated station which will include eight bedrooms, four motor bays, shedding at the rear of the site to house smaller vehicles and provision for further expansion, is anticipated to commence in early June.
The new facility has been funded through Project 2016, an initiative created in response to increased service delivery demand in key growth corridors of Victoria, at an estimated total cost of $7.7M.
