New helmets for volunteers

The recent AFAC Conference in Perth provided CFA staff and volunteers with the opportunity to test out the latest in firefighting equipment - including new structural firefighting helmets.

With State Government funding to replace the CFA’s more than 5500 structural firefighting helmets, the focus was on how these new helmets could benefit members, with Chief Officer Steve Warrington impressed with advances in design and fit technology.

“The planned replacement of our structural helmets immediately came to mind,” Steve said.

“We are determined to ensure we have the most effective replacement structural helmets for volunteers and as a result of what we saw at AFAC, are about to commence the procurement for the replacement of our Volunteers Structural Helmets.

“It was exciting to see the opportunities available to us in this competitive and knowledgeable space.”

Steve said members would be invited to be involved in choosing the new design.

“During the procurement process we will identify helmets that meet our specific requirements and then make these available in training situations to get feedback from members about comfortability and fit,” Steve said.

“I’m sure the evaluation process, including hands-on evaluation involving our volunteers will deliver a great product for our members.”

CFA’s Executive Director Infrastructure Services Anthony Ramsay, who also attended the AFAC Conference, said the procurement process for the new helmets was expected to commence in the next month.

“We believe the approach to market will generate significant interest and are looking forward to working with suppliers to get the best outcome for our volunteers,” Anthony said.
