Firefighters have helped save a Noble Park house from being destroyed after a garage fire spread to the home’s roof early this morning.
Dandenong Senior Station Officer Darren Padgett said crews were called to the Ardgower Road property shortly after 3am.
“When we arrived we found a garage out the back well alight, and it had quickly spread to the roof of the adjoining home,” he said.
“There was a considerable amount of clutter inside, including flamables.”
SSO Padgett said a mezzanine floor in the home made internal access to the roof space difficult.
“Firefighters were forced to smash tiles off the roof to access the fire and quickly discovered there was further clutter inside fuelling the flames.”
Around 40 firefighters from Dandenong, Keysborough, Noble Park and Springvale worked hard to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes.
SSO Padgett said despite not having a working smoke alarm, the owner of the property heard the crackle of the fire and managed to escape.
“This was extremely lucky, especially given how noisy it was last night from the gusty wind.
“Only working smoke alarms save lives. Especially at this time of night, a working smoke alarm is vital to ensure to wake up in the event of a fire.”
