Nominate an outstanding CFA member for an Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in the next round of Australian Honours.

Nominations have opened for the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) as part of the 2024 Australia Day Honours.

Each year CFA coordinates the AFSM nominations on behalf of our members

By participating in the Australian Honours we recognise the exceptional contribution our people make to CFA and to their communities as well as communities across Victoria and throughout Australia.

CFA features strongly in the awards each year, with five AFSM recipients recently announced in the 2023 Australia Day Honours in recognition of their dedicated service.

Any CFA member and member of the public can put forward a nomination for someone who meets the criteria and who they know deserves to be honoured.

CFA is a widely-diverse organisation, and nominations that recognise our women and gender-diverse members, members from a range of cultural backgrounds and members of all sexualities are strongly encouraged.

The nomination process and form for the AFSM has recently been updated as per the requirements from the Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat to include details of current and past frontline service. Members using their frontline experience for training or education in the support of others on the frontline, may also be eligible for the award.

Nominations are first considered by the Honours, Awards and Remembrances Committee of the CFA Board with final decisions made by the Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat.

Nominations close 19 May 2023. All nominations are strictly confidential.

Introduced in 1988, the AFSM is awarded twice a year in recognition of distinguished service by a member of an Australian fire service.

The prestigious award honours the exceptional contribution members of the fire service make to protecting lives and property; those who may have gone above and beyond their duties or achieved something remarkable in difficult or unusual circumstances.
