In the first weekend of May, a select group of dedicated District 14 volunteers undertook the practical assessment of the Drive Under Operational Conditions.

The successful completion of the course will allow individuals to confidently drive the appropriate vehicle according to their training.

In the preceding months, participants attended Doreen Fire Station to study the theory under the watchful eyes of accredited Instructors.

Back at their own brigades, they put in many hours of driving to hone their new skills and put put into practice the Hendon Driving System, regarded by many as the most effective system for modern drivers.

The system is a drill, each step of which is to be considered (in sequence) by the driver, at the approach to any hazard.

A hazard is anything dangerous or potentially dangerous that a driver may encounter - anything which would or could interrupt your progress.

Although the facilities at Doreen Fire Station are a little cramped, the candidates were able to take advantage of the varied driving conditions of the peri-urban environment.

The feedback from the attendees was that it was an interesting and challenging course.

The Instructors were very pleased with the progress of all the participants.
