Paralympian gold medallist Sam Bramham OAM has joined members of CFA’s South East Next Generation group on a networking cruise on Gippsland Lakes.
Sam, who broke the world record for 100m butterfly at the age of 16, spoke to the future CFA leaders about his inspiring journey to his first gold medal and his experiences as a two-time Paralympian.
The cruise brought together CFA members travelling from Gippsland and across the region - most participants had never met before.
Regional Manager Volunteer Sustainability Louise Haughton said the trip was designed to break down barriers and open up new networks.
“The CFA Next Generation is all about supporting young people to develop and share in CFA,” Louise said.
“The network not only encourages young members to get involved, it allows older members who support the development of the next generation of CFA members to get involved too.
“By continuing to offer events, as well as our Next Generation CFA Facebook Group, we’re providing opportunities for our young members to share, learn and grow.”
In addition to Sam’s inspiring message, great weather meant participants were able to see dolphins and seals which encouraged a positive atmosphere.
“Networking has many benefits,” Louise said.
“It offers opportunities for mentoring support, sharing of ideas, friendships, support from outside their townships, and learning about each other’s areas and the fire risks they face.”
Sam said it was an honour to speak with CFA volunteers and recognise their selfless dedication to their communities and Victoria.
