Waubra Fire Brigade recently took part in a planned stubble burn, helping its members learn more about fire behaviour.

The burn, completed under a Schedule 13 permit, allowed firefighters to gain more experience when it came to real-life fire scenarios, and was particularly beneficial for the brigade’s newer members.

Facilitated by Captain Arvin Gallagher and Acting Training Officer Lilli Abel, the day saw a range of learning opportunities for participants.

“It introduced members to a stubble fire scenario and the way fire behaves,” Arvin said.

“The stubble burns mimic grass and scrub fires we often attend, so it was great practice.

“We had perfect conditions for burning to allow members to learn so much on the day.

“We got to see how fire behaved when there was no wind, then the wind picked up and we saw how that affected the spread and path of the fire.

“Everyone who took part thought it was a great opportunity to learn.”
