Private bushfire bunkers

A private bushfire bunker that meets rigorous safety standards can provide shelter for people from the immediate life-threatening effects of bushfire.

By Janelle Hunt

Fire shelters have been used throughout history and in recent years there has been growing interest in communities and a significant growth in the construction and installation of private bushfire shelters (or bunkers).

Recent amendments to the Victorian Planning Provisions (VPP), regarding changes to the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) includes a reference to private bushfire bunkers and their use to offset construction levels. This will provide  incentive for some living in these bushfire risk areas to consider installing a private bunker.

CFA is working to provide advice to the community about these places of last resort.

Initial advice to inform and assist your community with planning and preparedness around private bushfire shelters has now been published on the CFA Website.
