Putting the pieces together

Most firefighter training covers the physical things they need to do at fire calls - bowling out hoses, pumping water and putting the fire out.

But trust and communication are also vitally important when it comes to firefighting.

Putting

At The Basin Fire Brigade they have a novel way of improving their communications skills.

They put 20 firefighters in a room with terrible acoustics, blindfold two of them and give them the task of completing a puzzle each, with only the blindfolded person allowed to touch the puzzle pieces.

Fifth Lieutenant Gabby Keats says it’s a fun activity that mixes it up for members.

“It forces the blindfolded person to put their complete trust in the communication from their fellow team members,” Gabby said.

“It was interesting to see how both the teams had slightly different tactics to achieve the same outcome.”
