Race car destroyed by fire

Responding to a call for a structure fire, Edithvale volunteers were confronted with a car fire totally involved inside a garage in Aspendale Gardens at approximately 2.30pm this afternoon.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus successfully contained the fire to the garage of the Aspendale Gardens property avoiding damage to a large fishing boat, house and neighboring properties through their quick action.

Edithvale Captain Graham Fountain said "the cause of the fire that damaged the expensive saloon racing car, garage and other property was a fuel leak that ignited when the vehicle was started during a routine service. The owner of the property who was working on the race car had to escape the blaze by jumping through the car window when it ignited whilst he was in the vehicle. He suffered minor burns to his hands and minor smoke inhalation but the situation could have been a lot more serious" Captain Fountain confirmed.

Edithvale Pumper, Tanker, Car and Salvage supported by Patterson River Pumper attended the scene with over 20 firefighters.
