A contingent of Victorian Red Knights Motorcycle club members were part of the estimated 120,000 in attendance for the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Red Knights Road captain and Hillside CFA volunteer Ashley Mappin said 27 club members made the journey to the national capital, with one group departing from Wallan and the other leaving Sale.
“It was a cold morning but It was a brilliant service and moving for all – very special to share it with the thousands of other people that were in attendance,” he said. Ashley said it was great fun being a Red Knight member.
“It is a brilliant group of like-minded people from right across the fire services that share a common interest in motorcycling, but it’s more than just that – you meet new people and share experiences that bond you together while promoting motorcycle safety.” “I have made lifelong friends through being a member of the Red Knights and so can anyone. All you need is a bike license, access to a registered / roadworthy motorcycle and a history in the fire services whether current or retired, staff or volunteer. It’s that simple – we have chapters all over the country. “
Ashley said the Red Knights regularly went on rides in support of other emergency service organisations. “For the last few years, a group of us have ridden to Canberra every September for the Wall to Wall Ride. This is a Police event where Police members ride to the nation’s capital from every state and territory to remember police members that have lost their lives in the line of duty.”
