Respect is equality; 16 Days of Activism continues

CFA continues to support 16 Days of activism which aims to increase awareness of gender-based violence and discrimination in all spheres.

Respect

Paul Webster is a volunteer and trainer at Berwick Fire Brigade, as well as the Chair of the South East Region Inclusion & Fairness Council.

For 16 Days of Activism, Paul is shining a light on equal respect for all members of his brigade, no matter their role, gender or any other factor.

"Respect is treating everyone at my brigade equally,” Paul said.

The CFA Organisational Development Team led the work to bring Introduction to Bystander training to CFA for the second year.  The team played their part in raising awareness of gender inequality and violence against women.

Inclusion and Fairness Coordinator Terri Wright said the feedback received from those attending the training was overwhelmingly positive.

“The active bystander tools can be used to challenge gender inequality and disrespect.  The skills learnt are transferrable in any form of discrimination, harassment or bullying.

“These tools are designed to reinforce healthy, respectful behaviours and focus on what people in the workplace and communities can do to make a difference.

“Attendees have said they felt more confident to call out inappropriate behaviour thanks to having a better understanding of what they can do in different situations if they feel comfortable and safe.

“It’s great that we can still deliver this training online and more broadly.”

The training is a two-and-a-half-hour course designed to equip CFA people with the skills and confidence to identify and respond to instances of gender inequality and behaviour that both disrespects women and condones violence against women.

Members can still register for the last training session on Tuesday 8 December 7pm to 9.30pm. To find out more or to register email the Inclusion and Fairness team.

16 Days of Activism is about raising awareness and showing visible support and there is still time to get involved.

Members can share CFA’s posts online to show their support, seek out other 16 days of activism events in their local area or simply start a conversation.

The Inclusion and Fairness Team would love to hear what you or your local brigade is doing to celebrate 16 Days of Activism. If you have a story or photo to share, or seek assistance please contact the Inclusion and Fairness Team at inclusionandfairness@cfa.vic.gov.au
