Second TFB declared in the Mallee

CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson has declared a total fire ban for tomorrow Saturday November 8 for the Mallee district.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting high temperatures, strong dry winds and a fresh dry wind change during the day. Vegetation in the north and west of Victoria is drying rapidly.  Fire danger will be elevated with severe fire danger rating in these three districts and very high fire danger elsewhere.

Chief Officer Ferguson said residents and visitors to the region in particular needed to heed the warnings.

“Most of Western Victoria, where the Fire Danger Period has already begun, is experiencing very dry conditions after 3 months of below average rainfall.

“High temperatures and wind, combined with the lack of recent rainfall are expected to create tough conditions for our firefighters tomorrow in the north and north west of the state.

"In a Total Fire Ban any fire in the open air is strictly forbidden - that includes campfires and burnoffs.  Welding, grinding, soldering and gas cutting is also forbidden.”

Mr Ferguson concluded that the earlier than usual fire danger period should serve as a wakeup call for residents in high risk areas to get their properties ready for a long and challenging summer.
