Members of Inverloch Fire Brigade's new brigade management team (BMT) recently sought to improve the way they interacted and communicated with their community.
While the brigade’s volunteers are generally available to respond to emergencies 24/7, they are not always available at the station for queries and information. The BMT decided to install a programmable LED message sign to provide constant important information to the community about safety messages, recruitment, weather and fire conditions.
Funding for the purchase of the sign was provided by the RACV Inverloch Resort through its Good Citizen Program. The sign was installed by local CFA volunteers who operate their own businesses and funded using brigade funds from community donations. John Muir of 'Complete Care - Property Maintenance & Management' installed the fixings for the sign while Jason Mathieson from 'Matho’s Electrical Service' provided the electrical work.
The sign will be managed by two of the BMT’s newest and youngest members, Communications officer Hayden Tipping and Community Safety Coordinator Liam McCall. It features full colour messages that are programmed and updated wirelessly with automatic time and temperature displays. It automatically dims in low light to maintain a suitable brightness throughout its operation.
The total cost of the sign and installation was $7000 and would not have been possible without community support from individuals and businesses alike.
Being a volunteer at the Inverloch fire brigade has provided young members like Hayden, Liam and Inverloch’s new 4th Lieutenant Ash McDermott, with skills in leadership, teamwork, emergency management and specialised firefighting skills.
As CFA takes a stronger focus on community engagement, fire prevention and planning, Hayden and Liam take on important roles within the brigade.
Inverloch Fire Brigade, along with other surrounding brigades, are continuously looking for new members interested in volunteering their time to provide community safety through fire and emergency management and response. The brigade is particularly interested to hear from people who may be available during business hours to respond to emergencies, with time commitment flexible around what the individual can provide. No previous experience or special skills are required.
