Smoke alarm saves elderly couple

A working smoke alarm has alerted an elderly couple to a fire in their Merrigum home early this morning (26 June).

CFA crews responded to reports of a house fire on Morrissey Street around 4.30am. The elderly couple escaped through a window as the house was filled with smoke.

The fire was under control within 30 minutes.

District 12 Operations Manager Rob Van Dorsser said damage was reported in the lounge room, roof space and the house was severely smoke-logged.

“This is the second house fire in a month where a working smoke alarm has saved lives,” he said.

The cause is thought to be an electrical fault in the lounge area.

Three trucks from Tatura and Merrigum attended.
