Sparks fly at Torquay

CFA crews are at the scene of a sparking high voltage substation, located at the rear of a Torquay supermarket.

Crews were called around 1.15pm to the sparking 22,000 volt substation at Woolworths.

District 7 Operations Officer Wayne Aylmer said shoppers were evacuated as a precaution.

“The substation is sparking with loud bangs and flashes of flames,” he said.

“It has taken power out in the immediate area.”

Wayne said Powercor would isolate the power allowing firefighters to dry extinguish the sparking kiosk.

Brigades from Torquay, Anglesea, Belmont, Geelong and Grovedale attended.
