Steep land challenges fireys at Bairnsdale

Up to 40 CFA firefighters and 15 trucks attended a significant house fire yesterday (Wednesday) evening at an unoccupied, derelict property in Bairnsdale.

The house was fully alight and when firefighters arrived shortly after 7pm, and crews spent more than one-and-a-half hours bringing the fire under control.

Operations Officer Michael Cherry said that crews had done a fantastic job under very difficult conditions.

“The house was on a very steep block of land surrounded by thick vegetation,” he said.

“It was already collapsing when the crews got there,”

Fire fighters attacked the blaze using breathing apparatus, along with several trucks including the Traralgon Ladder Platform. Bairnsdale, Paynesville, Lakes Entrance, Mt Taylor and Sarsfield CFA brigades also attended.

The fire, which is deemed suspicious, is under investigation this morning.
