Around 60 staff and students from Whittlesea Secondary College had to be evacuated this afternoon following a fire in a classroom kitchen.
The fire, which was contained to a stove, was extinguished prior to the arrival of crews around 2.15pm.
CFA District 14 Duty Officer Gary Mynes said when firefighters arrived there was a large amount of smoke in the room.
“A staff member, who was passing by the room, first noticed the fire,” he said.
“The fire was put out by a staff member, who is also a volunteer at Research Fire Brigade, before calling CFA.
“This is a timely reminder to all Victorians to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed in their homes and workplaces.”
A crew from Whittlesea attended.
