Suspicious blaze destroys Geelong church

CFA is treating a fire that destroyed a Geelong West church early this morning (Friday) as suspicious.

CFA District 7 Duty Officer Geoff McGill said crews were paged to a structure fire on Pakington St at 4.30am.

“The first crews arrived to find the weatherboard church completely ablaze,” he said.

“Given the scale of the fire our focus turned to the protection of other buildings.

"As a result firefighters were able to save two neighbouring buildings from being damaged.”

Mr McGill said crews were able to confirm with the building’s owners that no one was inside.

“Unfortunately the weatherboard building has been destroyed,” he said.

“The structure is too unstable for firefighters to enter at this stage."

Around 30 firefighters helped to bring the blaze under control just after 6am.

Seven crews responded from Geelong West, Geelong and Corio.

A fire investigator will attend later this morning.
