Swift response in challenging conditions brings Newborough fire under control

Firefighters were called to a grassfire in Haigh Street, Newborough about 12.15pm on Sunday 27 December.

Two tankers and a pumper tanker and volunteer firefighters from Newborough and Moe CFA brigades responded to the grassfire, supported by career firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria.

CFA Rostered Duty Officer for District 27, Commander Gavin Parker, said the area of the fire, between Moe and Newborough, has several homes and buildings within grazing land.

"The fire was starting to spread into longer and dryer grass vegetation with potential for further spread, but the quick response by all including the landowner enabled the fire to be quickly brought under control in windy conditions," he said.

The fire was brought under control within half an hour. Its cause is unknown and is being investigated.
