Talks start over a new Firefighters’ Memorial

Consultation has begun on a new site and design for the CFA Firefighters’ Memorial.

A team of experienced volunteers - Alan Monti, Bob MacDonald and Peter Davis - is meeting with families and brigades who have lost members to gather their views on a new memorial.

CFA volunteers and staff can also have their say through an online survey, launched today.

The Firefighters’ Memorial recognises the 67 CFA members and the 11 Bushfire Brigades’ firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the community. It’s an important symbol of sacrifices made and lives changed forever, as well as a long-running site for the annual memorial service.

The CFA Board’s decision to close the Fiskville Training College means the current Memorial is no longer accessible. We want to make sure those who have lost their lives in the line of duty are not forgotten, and are working to identify an appropriate location for a new memorial.

The site, and the sacrifices it represents, will be treated with respect and sensitivity. Depending on the views expressed during our talks, parts of the existing Memorial could be incorporated into the new design.

As we move ahead with the consultation process, CFA will speak to families, friends, brigades and communities and these conversations will play a major role in planning the new Memorial.

The online survey can be accessed here and runs for almost eight weeks, closing at 11.59pm on Friday, 2 October.

We look forward to hearing your ideas.
