The Art of Roadside Burning

Hot off the press is a book on controlled roadside burning by Michael Rowe. Michael is the Captain of the Cape Clear Fire Brigade.

The Cape Clear Brigade has maintained a decades long tradition of roadside burning.  This practice was once widespread in rural areas but has decreased or totally disappeared in many parts of the country.

The aim of roadside burning is to create strategic fire breaks for community protection during the fire season.  Most years up to 40kms are burnt in the our area.  A roadside  burn can be an environmental burn.  One positive ecological result of this practice is the return of native grasses and lessening of introduced ‘weedy’ pasture species in these roadsides.
